Message from the Desert

The artist Jeff Koons said that to create art is only decorative, bringing it into being is metaphysical. He said that art should be powerful to communicate as strong as possible with respect.  Venturing out into an unknown with materials bringing this piece into being,  I experienced such a feeling. Painting on burlap was a new experience and adding collage even more challenging. Message from the Desert  spoke to me the entire time of the cry of the earth for respect and care.

As I create and use paper often things create themselves. This little layered collaged piece is a kind of gauzy material re-creating itself with other papers. Mary Todd Beam, a collage artist I like, said that sometimes in order to invent a new form you have to get rid of an old one.  She said we need to reach into the unknown and drag it into our space.

                                                            

 When I stop trying to micromanage every detail in my work, my hands let loose and the paint finds its own way home. This painting has been sold.

     This haiku poem is from Writing and Enjoying Haiku by Jane Reichhold.                                                           

            Haiku is a  form of  Japanese poetry consisting of         

            three lines, usually of a seasonal nature. Haiku has                          

            a musical tonality and is a lovely literary form.

    Passing by a window leading out on to our verandah on a hot and humid  morning, these shapes caught my eye and soon my                 

 camera.  The camera,new, and I were not yet fast friends. The camera, however, had a stunning surprise for me.  This photograph has not been edited except to crop it. The oriental watercolor look to it, the streaks of moisture creating almost bamboo like lines, the colors from the flash - a morning gift.

The ELEMENT of SURPRISE is always present in my creative process. I never know where the paint, paper, and my hands will take me.  I called this MERMAID TEARS  as it reminded me of a mythical sea creature caught in a golden net.

Someone once wrote that artists are the myth makers of today. I was struck by that comment in relation to Mermaid Tears. On a whim I googled mermaid tears on the net and, lo and behold, it is the name scientists are giving the millions of tiny pieces of plastic polluting today's oceans....

Mountain Musings

A mountain sojourn in the high country of North Carolina was an experience not to be forgotten....actually to be repeated! Tucked into the forest  we discovered an Inn that was beyond our expectation and which, indeed, fed our mountain musings. http://www.lazy-bear-lodge.com/PhotoGallery.aspx 
Not enough can be said about Lazy Bear Lodge, an exquisite hideaway overlooking historic Valle Crucis, N. C. We have our favorite Inns but this one now tops the list. Comfort, beauty, Appalachian charm, artistic touches, the living room was once used by HGTV for its design. 


This morning mountain view (touched up in sepia) greeted us each morning from our private porch, and the sounds of the forest gently brought us into another new day far from the maddening crowd.


The mountains and the towns of Boone and Blowing Rock held a muse in every nook and corner filling my mind with new ideas for my art.  The headquarters of Cheap Joe's Art Supply in Boone fed my art supply closets to overfilling.


There was a touch of the Fall we miss so much and flowers, flowers everywhere. Like meeting the old garden and roadside friends left behind in New England....

Today's Momento

Musings

Oops, to this post...forgot to save. This is what happens with going too fast.  Should have remembered what came across my way earlier today. Too excited about learning to blog in color!
This morning while waiting for someone in my car I was taken by the sight in  front of me of dozens of barn swallows swooping and diving across a lawn. It was like watching dancing calligraphy! It was enchanting and it lifted my soul.
Then later, as I walked out to the mailbox, a majestic dragonfly alighted on a plant stalk alongside my path.
Her eyes were encased in brilliant turquoise and her wings were diaphanous in the sunlight. 
Inspired by all of that, I spent time in the studio today experimenting with metallic colors and tried to remind my hand to let my shoulder sweep  f r e e l y  with paint or brush. My shoulder always wants to control. 
One of my favorite blogs is zenhabits.com. It is full of writings which help to slow down the pace, this is something I am always in need of remembering.
