This is a brand new piece that was a joy to create. There had been a hiatus as I prepped </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
and framed prints for a Boutique at my Church. I needed a nudge to get the creative</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
juices flowing again. I took a napkin printed with hydrangea and a blue butterfly and</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
decoupaged it onto my old written journal page. Recently I found transparent </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
butterflies ( finally) and let them join the printed one along with some scraps of pretty</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
shells I had put aside a long time ago. A few spontaneous splatters of paint. Then</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
on the bottom border a strip of sweet ribbon I had found at Hobby Lobby.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I am fond of this pieces because it is bright and interesting and offers depth. My text</div>

reminds us to live and enjoy the simple life.</div>

Mother's Journal<br />
<br />
I am working on a journal in memory of my Mother. This matches another side page which<br />
I shall post shortly. My husband often gets mailed cards from different charities. I realized<br />
that though I might not want to use the cards, there are often pretty envelope flaps, such<br />
as the top of the page here as well as borders I can use for journal pages or making cards.<br />
I am now cutting and collecting them. The lovely big butterfly was a transparent black<br />
lined one which I pasted on one of my watercolor pieces to make a striking addition. I<br />
cannot find any of these butterflies which I used to find at Hobby Lobby. I miss them as<br />
I used them on pages, tags and cards....<br />
<br />
<br />
Here are a couple of cards for a Church ministry I just finished with borders from<br />
other cards. Ephemera are from Hobby Lobby and Michael's.<br />

Lots of bits and pieces here just to remind us to breathe. Our times are laden with anxiety<br />
and we face pressures from every direction. Art is a form of meditation as it keeps the mind focused on beauty and expression. I find that collaging is like doing a puzzle, another type of anxiety reducing activity. Many who work in the arts are so filled with the anxiety of selling, competing, etc that<br />
all that peace does not or cannot filter through. When I am searching through my collection of "stuff" my mind is n the search and not about world events. <br />

<b> FOLLOW YOUR HEART</b><br />
<b> 11 x 14 framed</b><br />
<b> watercolor and ink on</b><br />
<b> Yuppo paper.</b><br />

<b> Sandra J. Pineault</b><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
As one works and stretches imagination, as one listens to the muse inside, things come together<br />
in new and surprising ways. My work is evolving. I found this bit of a watercolor on Yuppo<br />
paper and started using stencils here and there. It deepened and highlighted the color.<br />
I added a bit of bling to emphasize my message. Moved away from the collage and<br />
into pure watercolor abstract design. I am a sort of mixed artist. When I see something else<br />
is needed I go surfing through my "stuff" until something calls to me.<br />
<br />
I am very happy with the richness in this piece. If I had not come upon it, it would have<br />
lain hidden in a dark spot. I did straighten out Follow Your Heart before finishing. I have<br />
a touch of astigmatism and it sometimes interferes with my seeing something straight or not.<br />
<br />
Incidentally, I, Sandra Pineault, am writing this blog and not my husband. There is still<br />
a major problem with our blogs switching over to each other. I am letting it go for now.<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
Art journaling is about a lot of things but the most important of them is true expression </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
and honesty. I started working on this because I found a stash of my photos of daisies. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I printed out a couple on photo paper and then arranged them. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My mother was an amazing gardener. This was being directed to be a little tribute to her. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It is on one of my journal pages thus, the background writing that I sort of covered with </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
stencils and stamp pad color.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The white crane is one of my photos also, as is the photo of my mother chatting with</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
a woman at a garden center. I had these artsy butterflies which express my mother's</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
ingenuity, constant learning experiences and intellectual curiosity. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The rest of the items are found bits and pieces. Finally, the Blessed is my wishes</div>

for her for always. Used strips from the photographs to trim the edges.</div>

</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I believe each of us tend to stay safe in a few colors that do not disturb-ourselves or others.<br />
You cansee that in the many posts on Facebook of beginning artists that try the old stick in the mud style. This tends to happen when layering with color before the previous layer is dry.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I am becoming more comfortable with pure color. That is the beauty of using black which set off brighter colors and make them glow in high temperature.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
That happened with this full two page experiment in my journal. I especially like the<br />
right hand upper corner where it looks like the black and white butterfly shines in contrast.<br />
Yin and yang in art is a great help in everything we do,</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In my stash I found a sketch of a white flower which I cut out and put in the left page right<br />
corner. The white floral mid left is aa photo cut from a gardening magazine. The photos are from a long ago trip to Musee d' Orsay in Paris. I did add some text to the butterfly side.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I wore a disposable glove and used fingers to put on the paint and once in a while I dripped.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
New technique I have not used before.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>

<br />
Any type of art wants to reflect MYSELF or in your case YOURSELF. Often hard to do as we You Tube and drift through the art of so many other people. Letting go is a life long struggle in so many areas. This is my personal art journal and fear of what others think should not dissuade me one bit.<br />
<br />
I have learned through another journalist not to fear "the dark" of black. Wow, what a message<br />
for life!! I did this page this morning and I love it. The message is a motto I try to sing.<br />
I squiggled and pinned through this piece. In the beginning I thought I would tear it out. But I kept<br />
grabbing this media or that one. My collection of pieces from the gift my neighbor gave me of<br />
her old gardening magazines helps a lot. The goldfinch was from my late mother's stash of photos which I have in my iPhoto album. I love that she and I are collaborating here.<br />
<br />
I used stencils and stamp colors. I like there is no odor and no mess. I managed to layer here, too, which is a big goal of mine. <br />
<br />
<br />
There are a few things I might "fix" but this is an authentic piece and I do not want to spoil it.<br />
<br />
I find it helpful that I am creating something out of the pages where I have written so much.<br />
For me, it is like imbuing those pages, sometimes painful, of new life. This is an altered book. but my own journal pages over the years.<br />
<br />
Here is a great source I found this morning that helps that freedom grow...<br />

<br />
PRAYER PAGE ONE<br />
Multi-media on Paper<br />
<br />
7 1/2 x 9 1/2 "<br />
<br />
<br />
I have dropped in out of the blue after a long hiatus with a new project.<br />
<br />
In the past couple of years I have not worked my blog as other activities of life were front and center. Moving into a smaller home for one where as we get older we can spend more time doing the things we love versus cleaning and maintaining a larger home. Most of all spending time together.<br />
<br />
Also, my own health does not allow me to do my larger intuitive abstracts. Incredibly I am still selling from my home inventory. So I have minimized size, complexity and also begun to use the talent God has given me to give joy and hope to others. I have been designing cards for our Heart to Heart Ministry at our Parish Church. That keeps me busy as this ministry has been growing and growing. The cards allow me to experiment and enjoy just that.<br />
<br />
Then I read somewhere on Pinterest that one can use old journals to create multi-media creations.<br />
<br />
That has opened up a big new world and I am going to go larger with this as well. I started rather stilted but recently began to pour and dabble, use collage pieces such as old photos and text. Layer upon layer once again. Just experimenting from a stash collected over the years. Fun part is using sketches I have done over the years.<br />
<br />
I can revert back to childhood here and PLAY which I have always believed should underpin our art. Now I add to that memories, use of my imagination and all the tools I have often underused.<br />
<br />
The other thing I like is that it is always a work in progress. I can come into my studio, study the page and add another bit of color or design letting it build up slowly and deliciously.<br />
<br />
I have six journals and I hope to fill them all. A neighbor just gave me a whole pack of gardening magazines so I will be perusing those at my leisure cutting and planning how they might be used.<br />
<br />
I like to cut out the whole flower and perhaps use some geometric pieces from its background. Collage is a way to try different designs, snip and add here and there.<br />
<br />
For me, I am doing one side of the journal while putting a combination of color and design around a poem I have written over the years or a treasured letter from a grandchild.<br />
<br />
That is where I found the idea of calling these Prayer Pages: prayers of gratitude for so many<br />
blessings and prayers for those who have found their way into these pages.<br />
<br />
Note that the border area here is a cut out from one of my painting prints.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhT7tu6PSgH_z8bHVMtQh-12weavYpnDGZetAU9TQXMT0EfjTLZHEqewucsPRVcInPFjYBJr0sKQ15FuLBnth47dTsL8VNvGOUvyDh9gW60hXa1VSBOthDjy9FJ1DDLl-OH2uBUvCBQig/s1600/journal+page+format.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="478" data-original-width="547" height="558" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhT7tu6PSgH_z8bHVMtQh-12weavYpnDGZetAU9TQXMT0EfjTLZHEqewucsPRVcInPFjYBJr0sKQ15FuLBnth47dTsL8VNvGOUvyDh9gW60hXa1VSBOthDjy9FJ1DDLl-OH2uBUvCBQig/s640/journal+page+format.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I did not want to copy other art journalists so worked until my own style reasserted itself. I<br />
do a treasure hunt in my studio for found objects of all kinds. I am going to frame some of<br />
these for a show in October..for once I am ahead of myself....<br />
<br />
There are so many ideas of how to do this or something like this....the best part is to love and<br />
enjoy it....<br />

<br />
Yes, am back, will be now and then. Still "playing". But, there is still interest in my work, for which I am grateful. I am deep into my memoir blog which has been very gratifying in its reception. I should say, it is a memoir about the place and times of where I grew up. The link is<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I still take my black ink pen and sketch book with me on road trips. This little sea critter was started as I waited for my husband to return from a hike along the marsh and ocean. I had done my stint and was resting in the car. I call the technique if you recall, Vibrational Drawing. I started this before the Zentangle craze but no doubt they are cousins. It is a healing form of art, you can start it anywhere with any kinds of lines and work on it as it develops. It speaks to you, and hopefully, you are speaking through it. Begun with the eye, it went from there, as one would with Mandala. My mandalas are always with me. Using colored pen and pencil scattered on my desk I experimented and played.<br />
<br />
<br />
The title of this post is "Art: An Apothecary for the Soul", from an article in the WSJ Nov-2-3. 2013 which I may have quoted before. I kept a copy I liked it so much. The article is" Art for Life's Sake."<br />
It postulates that art may help us with key challenges in our life<br />

<i> Blessings in Red and Green</i><br />
<i> acrylic painting print</i><br />
<i> Sandra J. Pineault</i><br />
<br />
<br />
As I wandered through my digital art chest, this "Christmasy" piece popped up and asked to be<br />
my holiday greetings. Even with children and grandchildren grown and away there still is much to be done so this is my sharing. Wandering among different projects I am enjoying exercising creativity in word as well as with my hands. I am busy working on my memoirs online which I find very satisfying.<br />
<br />
<i>Blessings in Red and Green</i> reminds me of a newspaper piece I put aside to share with you from the Wall Street Journal where I find many articles of inspiration. This one in the Dec. 4, 2013 issue was titled <i>Motherwell and the Exuberance of Invention</i>. Apparently at one point Motherwell studied with Chilian Surrealist painter Roberta Matta. Matta urged Motherwell to try "automatic drawing." He told him to let go of conscious intention and allow the subconscious, assisted by speed of execution to take over the aesthetic act. The article went on to say that Leanardo had planted the seed of free association centuries earlier by encouraging artists to notice "landscapes" in stains on the wall and such. <br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Motherwell's drawings led him to collage. Later in the article Motherwell, it says, was led to</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
"the exuberance of Invention." </div>
<br />
This article resounded with me. It confirmed what I enjoy in both my drawing and my painting.<br />
It is also what I feel, letting myself be "led" by either the paint, the design, or just something within me trying to get out. So often when I see art in galleries that is stilted and trapped, as it were, I wish I could be in that studio and help the artist to experience "the exuberance of invention." It is joy unleashed. Those days when that experience came about I would shout to my husband to come and see what I had done, what had been done in spite of me….like a child. That really is what artists like myself strive for, that forgetfulness of the ego and its demands. What better time to begin to understand that then at the wonderful time of Christmastide.<br />
<br />
<br />
Merry Christmas to you and yours!<br />

I am always finding very good articles about the art world in the WSJ, but this one was a winner. It hit home in so many ways.<br />
<br />
Artists know disappointment, actually it is usually a daily meal for us. Often, just a disappointment when things don't sell, or one's muse does not come through. A few weeks ago, I had one of the biggest upsets of my career. A private club contacted me to see my work, all of which is now in my home gallery. I invited them - four of them-into my home. They fell in love with my work and asked if we could bring nine large pieces to the site of a new renovation, which we did. It was smashing and would give me incredible exposure. I was walking on air. After they signed an agreement, they asked to keep the pieces overnight and we agreed. To make a long story very short, the whole deal feel through with a whole lot of deception thrown in. The excitement had made me think about painting again, that was short lived. Maybe that was the message of it all….who knows.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
My pieces now again adorn my walls, I would have missed them actually. They soothe and calm me, they are me. This article speaks of how art can heal us, can "enter into our being and perhaps adjust how we respond to challenge and anxiety." </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I find oriental art does that beautifully, like this piece below by Hirosage.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
There are those of "sophisticated" taste, so says the WSJ, that worry that art such as</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Claude Monet's <i>Waterlilies</i> will make people forget that there is evil and suffering in the world.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Really? On the contrary, how can we forget. What we do need in art, in my opinion,</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
is a place to go, to rest our souls, to find our roots of stability. Henri Matisse showed us optimism in his painting, <i>The</i> <i>Dancers</i>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
When we are intensely responding to beauty we are experiencing the wish that things could be so much better. "None of this is sentimental. Strategic exaggerations of what is beautiful and good can perform a critical function; they distill and concentrate the hope that we require to chart a path</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
through the difficulties of existence."</div>

Often when an event unsettles and disappoints us, we are only feeling the tip of the iceberg. It is a symbol of everything that hurts, that goes wrong, that frustrates, and especially our fear of the great unknown that looms ahead and around us. Art can touch our souls, steady us, give us</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
an anchor with which to remember peace, freedom from pain. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It helps us artists remember how important our mission, to ourselves</div>

and not just to others.</div>

<br />
As you all know, I have been experimenting with art journal creativity, trying to find my own signature as it were. There are zillions of videos and samples on Pinterest and the net for this but none of them what I was seeking. Finally, after layering and playing I ended up with this free form intuitive design for a page. The materials used for this page were gesso, acrylic, glue, collaged pieces of old work, stamps and embossing. A whole lot of putting down and listening. One of my favorite quotations by Rumi is "There are a hundred ways to kneel and kiss the ground". That is the writing which traverses the piece. Others include Anne LaMotte and William Blake. They were written on bits of paper in my poetry folder so it is good to give them a real home. Poets and artists really belong together anyway. I am starting to get into this now.<br />
<br />
Other quotations used in this piece: <br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
"Pebbles belong to no one until you pick them up...then they are yours." </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Worth</div>
<br />
"And we are put on earth, a little space, that we may learn to bear the beams of love."<br />
William Blake<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
"So let go, let go, let go. Unhook, unhook, take the fish hook out of your chest...<br />
there is no escape so ... sit down at where you are at, feel the connection ...to the floor, breath, notice that there is a tiny crack, a little bit of something...that is how the light gets in."</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Anne LaMotte</div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
As I was looking through some Pinterest art pins, I came upon a piece by Joan Miro....see how</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
we are inspired by the artists of the past. Very different but very spatial....<br />
and see how the light gets in.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I only came across this when I had finished the page above. Fun.</div>

<br />
Recently we returned from a lovely two weeks in the mountains of North Carolina, not far from the<br />
Blue Ridge Parkway. It was a time of peace, of healing and rejuvenation for both of us. I was following the 21 day Mediation Challenge on iPad and would sit out in the beautiful garden of the home we rented. This particular day I took along my markers and sketchbook. It seems that the piece radiates the sun that warmed me where I sat, the hum of bees and the myriad butterflies that flew everywhere. I finished the piece later in the evening in the house, with the mind photos still fluttering in my head and through to my markers. Times like these are so special and inspire us to record them in our own creative way rather than just in photos....but here are some photos, anyway, to inspire you.<br />
<br />
<i> The flowers I drew were not these, but these are better photos... enjoy!!</i><br />

A few moments ago I was exercising on my stationary bike (it is a small inexpensive one I got from Sears-does not take much room) when a few books on a nearby shelf caught my attention. I forget all about the books I have acquired over the years. Two of them I would like to share with you. I am also listening to Rachmaninoff on my computer so simmering way down...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnEFw2EsXhFPmyAo_bzIWKh3KN8LbukGyDqtb3xKe1fGI9XsVPS0x_DizzmhjHnp4fpeIf15xP-zbCGHO9GNZdQR34CO3f6YohoD5sCOx2vuYDRA7fXpgNej9kiDBLBvbwB5UwLxurNg/s1600/al+mucha+book+.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="356" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnEFw2EsXhFPmyAo_bzIWKh3KN8LbukGyDqtb3xKe1fGI9XsVPS0x_DizzmhjHnp4fpeIf15xP-zbCGHO9GNZdQR34CO3f6YohoD5sCOx2vuYDRA7fXpgNej9kiDBLBvbwB5UwLxurNg/s400/al+mucha+book+.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
The first book concentrates on the art nouveau designs of three artists including the wonderful Alphone</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Mucha. A friend found it in Paris and recommended it. It is inspiring as well as a source of designs for whatever project comes about. I sometimes use it for french matting techniques.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
If you are not aware of french matting...check it out. It will enhance your framed work. French matting is the art of applying watercolor washes and lines painted in unlimited shade variations and widths to embellish a paper borne subject. Started in the 18th century and reintroduced in the 60's. I also was inspired by early monastic illuminations of scripture. It is worth studying those also. For me, it was another challenge. Sometimes I pulled the design of the painting out onto the mat.<br />
<br />
Here is something to start you off:<br />
<a href="http://www.ehow.com/how_8163844_do-french-matting.html">http://www.ehow.com/how_8163844_do-french-matting.html</a><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
The second book is related to the first but is a fascinating look at patterns in nature and how<br />
they can inspire drawings and composition. I would also recommend Japanese patterns as well.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhX6OWB6Z8k9m9RDK4V658u7hUNIaKhG9MOK0BUR6TnMk23zGiUGagJuFclhXbv2ZYGRRxWxTZ80YWxOQtgctGAX1ec7hNCr4uWXvN0lgKHNQQeVqTf16uxAm8OWxJUzWkOhrG8gP4YVQ/s1600/pattern+book+.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhX6OWB6Z8k9m9RDK4V658u7hUNIaKhG9MOK0BUR6TnMk23zGiUGagJuFclhXbv2ZYGRRxWxTZ80YWxOQtgctGAX1ec7hNCr4uWXvN0lgKHNQQeVqTf16uxAm8OWxJUzWkOhrG8gP4YVQ/s640/pattern+book+.png" width="441" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Two examples of french matting in my work. I once took a year long course in matting and framing and learned french matting there. It does require a bit of nerve and a steady hand, but it is worth it. If you are cutting your own mats, it is less nerve wracking. </div>
<br />
The first is a nursery painting I did some years ago. The second a large abstract. I had kept the painted mat clean and just fitted the abstract painting into it....works well!!<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
I covered an entire page with this "soul humming" design. Fascination with the strokes of pen and pencil stroke and how one can dive into them to achieve depth of field, has long been something special for me . When I did mainly painting, I lost the peaceful experience of abstract drawing.<br />
How I missed it!<br />
<br />
This morning waiting for my husband to return from a doctor's appointment, I sat in the car in a quiet treed area and worked on this design. I started stiffly up in the right hand corner then let my hand and pen dance loosely across the page to give me direction. Then it started humming. I kept working, as we sat on the ferry and crossed St. John's river. When we arrived home, it too had arrived. The paper is graphed hence the squares you see. I am going to print a copy and play with color to see what happens. Maybe, maybe not.<br />
<br />
Do you see a moonlit garden and the possibility of fireflies and magic?<br />
<br />
It is also a pregnant bloom, giving the sense that there are possibilities yet to be birthed. My paintings always have this depth but I learned it all in my experimental drawings. Try drawing, not to draw "something" but only to experiment with design, with what comes from your soul. Soothing, humming is what you will find. The Zen of healing art at its most powerful.<br />
<br />
Today reading I came upon a powerful practice. When you happen upon something of beauty, stop and while looking at it take ten deep breaths. I am going to start doing that. The artist within us needs stopping, breathing. It is only when I was forced to stop my painting that I found again the lost art of drawing my soul craved. <br />

Drawing or doodling as high art as I call it, can tell you many things. It can lead you to places in your mind and heart. Or it can simply be a way to follow your pen or pencil. Like a meditation.<br />

I like to think I predated Zentangles. However, the Zentangle experience is kind of similar. For me each of these is a meditation, and often I will write my feelings before and after the piece is done.<br />
These are a cross between a mandala and a sketch. The circle, sacred in Tantric art, provides a place of safety and an edge where one can play with pencil and inspiration.<br />

Still making my way through my creativity on a new road. I am not able to stand long at my artist table. However, since my husband is occupying my studio space, too, one day when I needed another surface we pulled in a folding 4 x 6 table. It works fine. I can pull up a desk chair and all set! <br />
<br />
There have been a few new "creative" developments. First, I took on a student. Finally gave in. This is new since I am most used to group teaching. But, it was very good.<br />
<br />
Next I began a painting project: a nursery gift for a new nephew that will soon arrive in the family.<br />
It took a long time researching. I prefer to use photos of live animals and then work to give them another personality. Then, on and on with sketches and drawings and composing. This is way different than my abstract work. It did, however, remind me of the satisfaction of creating. All in all, the total piece took nearly a month to complete.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here is stage one: this stage probably took over two weeks. Creativity demands pulling back and letting messages come through. That often happened when I first awoke in the mornings.<br />
Composing was another task, being sure the negative space had a form of its own.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEix7VJaenJoIbEjL-MTq-QOWSipBiLD1G_1A90RWzbQaGmw5wQNslOZ9usHALLhn5e9mbuJKoSPgs-jhNsMsUyhZ71kdLH3s1s3Ons0z6u2Z1v4QCrReDl3hG_1S9ctQrZ9jButqbSVDQ/s1600/nursery+1+.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEix7VJaenJoIbEjL-MTq-QOWSipBiLD1G_1A90RWzbQaGmw5wQNslOZ9usHALLhn5e9mbuJKoSPgs-jhNsMsUyhZ71kdLH3s1s3Ons0z6u2Z1v4QCrReDl3hG_1S9ctQrZ9jButqbSVDQ/s640/nursery+1+.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Stage Two: the dreaded color choices. I started with the zebra and the giraffe as they spoke to me early on and offered the most opportunity to play with color and shapes.<br />
They would set off the others.<br />
<br />
At this point I did not like the sky at all.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
All during this time I started studying children's book illustrations on Pinterest. This prompted me to start a board just on that. I love old vintage illustrations including Beatrice Potter. In the next post I will discuss my one attempt at illustrating a children's book. Everything in my painting at this stage is blah. Gngerly I look for ways to define and excite it. I do not want the painting to keep the little one awake but do want him to enjoy looking at it.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Finally, ta da....it is finished. I am awaiting delivery of the mat and frame. Twin nieces, now five, have a corner of their bedroom which they call The Pineault Gallery (I am very honored!) where they add new pieces I send to them. I have taken also, to designing and illustrating the boxes in which the children's gifts are mailed. This has the advantage of also delighting the post office staff. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Everything can be fun!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The sky was the biggie. It allowed me to "go abstract" and play. I love the result. It gave the piece depth of field, as did working the grassy area where the group sits.The tropical bird flew away from the back of the zebra as he was a distraction. There are things I wish I could improve on, but this stands as it is now. All my years in art have told me when to stop. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I hope this is the stuff of which sweet dreams are made....</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This is the start of another children's home art gallery.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #eeeeee;">A few weeks ago we were blessed enough to get up to the North Carolina mountains, to a lodge</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #eeeeee;">we love (Lazy Bear Lodge, Villis, N.C.). It was a time to reflect and rest after a series of tests and</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #eeeeee;">medical appointments at the Mayo Clinic which left me rattled. The lodge offers a lovely Appalacian</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #eeeeee;">style porch overlooking a koi pond and garden. I began this drawing in an intuitive style, what I call vibrational drawing. I had no idea what would result, but I knew what was in my heart. I simply followed where the pen and lines took me, later I worked on it on the long car ride home. It captured me as nothing had in a long time. When I finally looked at it I could see a combination creature: part butterfly, part dove, part whatever one would want. The creature, who still has no name, was carrying a burden, exemplified in the sphere held aloft. It is always a source of amazement to me how therapeutic art can be when it is carried out without expectation. Opening ourselves is not an easy task. To be open and trustful when confusing and frightening news comes along is also not easy.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #eeeeee;">Pen and sketchbook can remind us that we are not alone, that we are being carried, and that</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #eeeeee;">answers and help await us if we but seek. Perhaps this should be called, The Seeker, carrying a treasure that we do not yet recognize.</span></div>
<span style="color: #eeeeee;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #eeeeee;">It would be splendid if someone out there, among the many visitors to this blog would share their thoughts....we all help and inspire each other. You are so very welcome, visitor.</span></div>

Our hearts and prayers go out to the victims of the tragedy in Boston yesterday and their families, that those injured may survive. That those who have suffered terrible loss be<br />
consoled if that is possible.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
That the evil one or ones who perpetrated this terrible event<br />
may soon be brought to a fitting justice.</div>

Where does the creative urge come from that beats a steady tattoo in our souls? That urge to shape, to bend, to move fingers, hands, arms. To write, paint, sculpt, cut, draw, bring forth from lips and instruments song and sound. To truly see, hear, allow beauty<br />
as well as tragedy to sound in our beings.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Above all: to seek, shout, share with the world what we have brought forth!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
That is the awesomeness of blogging, that sharing. The Internet is a vast reservoir that allows us painlessly (albeit cautiously) to go global and bring it on!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
These past months I have been chasing a dream, a dream of healing. I suspended my painting and sought creative release in writing as I have already mentioned. The need to use my fingers and imagination to create through drawing has been strong, I have given in to it. It is an easy, portable method of opening up my spirit. Often those drawings speak to me, in metaphor it is true, but it is a powerful tool for healing and for enduring.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This past week my medical journey has brought me to the great Mayo Clinic. As I sit and await a test or appointment I seek out my pen and sketch book, either to write or to draw. I am sharing these drawings here as well as on Pinterest where there is a bottomless number of people finding that drawing, sketching and doodling is addictive and a pleasure. My Pinterest board for sharing mine and other's drawing is called Doodling as High Art.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This was done in my writing tablet in the laboratory waiting area. I just felt like letting loose and</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
quickly doodled what I call a Doodle Fish. The squared lines allowed playing with some shapes inside the fish and are amenable to some color later.<br />
<br />
As always: first the drawing and then it names itself.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
This is called Dragonspeak. I love the strength of this mythical creature as it rises up on its hind legs to fight the battle...when one is going through medical issues, it truly is a battle. A battle to be sure one is at the right place with the right practitioner, a battle to stay hopeful and maintain a sense of humor through it all. Often one cannot just scream out frustration and fear, so drawing these creatures allows them to do it for you. Many articles and books have been written on the </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
subject of healing through art. I deeply believe in it.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I practice it, always have.</div>

I have recently become enamoured with Pinterest and its potential for letting others know about our art, as well as learning what others are doing. If you have not yet done this, I would highly recommend it.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
As part of my healing process, I am pinning a board titled Doodling as High Art. Working in pencil as well as pen and ink is a very satisfying method of working your art and as a discovery tool. In my work with Mandalas, this is especially true.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<b><i> Healing and Creativity</i></b><br />
<br />
<i><b>Sandhill Cranes on their migration path; Arizona.</b></i><br />
<i><b> Photograph by Stewart Burchard</b></i><br />
<br />
<br />
A dear friend took this photograph from a trip we all made to Arizona some years ago. It chronicled an experience I will never forget. The four of us had heard that over 20,00 sandhill cranes came in each day during a brief time to forage on their migratory path. Intrigued, we went to see it. How could there really be so many of them?<br />
<br />
Well, there<i> were</i> and the sight and the sound was a nearly mystical moment for each of us. Imagine, if you will, multiplying what you see in the photograph above. The sound of their soft voices and the whir of their wings was like a hymn quieting our souls.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Creativity comes in many guises, all of those guises help us to heal from loss, be it physical or otherwise. This past year, as I wrote earlier, was a time of health issues that resulted in the loss of some of my independence and an increase in physical pain. But, the year was also an intense loss of another kind, one we have come to depend on: friendship either through death or loss through misunderstanding or even just the erosion of aging.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
<i><b>Life is precious. Family is precious. Friendship is precious.</b></i><br />
<i><b>Live each moment to the fullest.</b></i></div>
<br />
The creativity we bring to our lives can be a blessing, a gift to others. With those friends and their spouses walking the long goodbye, I promised to send them a card each month, just to let them both<br />
know we think of them still and send our love. It has meant much to each spouse and even more<br />
to us. Another friend has suffered a terrible accident resulting in brain damage, she is under care for perhaps years before restoration of function. Often I send my own art on cards. One who no longer knows me is/was an incredible artist who constantly encouraged my work. She no longer remembers who we are, no longer understands the wonderful art she once created. I walked that path with her as she forgot her art bit by bit and she finally forgot me.<br />
<br />
Perhaps my work now is to understand what my art can be for others as well as for myself. As we show the house now, I am pleased that somehow my work speaks to those who enter our home. I also am writing more. I have embarked upon a blog that chronicles my growing up in a very special place. It has been a tremendous boon to see how so many have responded to the blog, and that others who grew up there have shared their experiences letting me me know their thoughts.<br />
<br />
This is my Memoir Blog.<br />
