Throughout civilization the color red  has denoted life and the sacred.  Feng Shui philosophy, the art of placing things, such as furniture, for success, recommends something red to be in a room where creativity takes place. Even in western society red denotes heat, passion, energy.  In China, red signifies longevity, in Tibet it is the color of monk's robes. There is a special complex style of painting utilizing mainly red called Thankas in the Eastern tradition.

In a far eastern language, the word for red and white is Kohaku: ko: red and white:haku. Pronounced as one word, their use signifies happiness and celebration.
